While at Indiana University, Janie studied anthropology as well the French language. She studied abroad in Rome, Italy, working on an archaeological site in the city. After graduation, Janie spent time teaching outdoor recreation to teenagers, eventually landing in Australia to teach outdoor education down under. She has visited and traveled throughout Southeast Asia, Central America, Europe, and Oceania adventuring and exploring different cultures and people. Janie pursued a master’s in outdoor recreation and education at Ohio University. Her research at OU focused on how to increase women’s empowerment through outdoor recreation programming. This research led Janie to start the first all-women’s spring break outdoor program at the university. Janie has been working for Indiana University Outdoor Adventures as the academic coordinator for the past year. Last summer she led Cultural Exploration Fiji, New Zealand, & Australia.
JOSHUA RUSTIN
Charleston Southern University, B.A., Religion
While at Charleston Southern University, Joshua studied religion and psychology. He spent his summers working with the homeless population in New Orleans or working at a summer camp for high school students. After graduation he spent three months volunteering and hiking in Nepal before moving to Haiti full time in 2011, where he observed the complexities of systemic poverty in a developing country. He managed a neighborhood nutrition program and community garden as a way of providing adequate nutrition within the neighborhood. He also spent a lot of his time volunteering at a local school and clinic, as well as hosting visiting teams. After leaving Haiti he worked for three years in Georgia running a neighborhood community center for middle school and high school students. Joshua has traveled to 49 states and 20 different countries, including longer stints in the Caribbean, New Zealand, Uganda, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. He is proficient in Haitian Creole and tries to return to Haiti as often as possible. Joshua recently moved to San Diego, where he continues to pursue work in community development.
